The Breakfast Club

Breakfast is infinite in forms and, if done right, the most perfect start to a day. But it’s also something which we, as sleep deprived teenagers, don’t have much time for.

This week I challenged some friends of mine, both breakfast skippers and breakfast scoffers, to a week of good breakfasts. Waking up 10 or 15 minutes earlier, they took the time to create their most satisfying morning meals. The question at the centre of the experiment was simple; do we love our beds or our brekkies more?

The conclusions were mixed; some of them were all for it, with others gradually dropping out over the week. What I ended up with however, is a selection of different breakfast ideas, as well as tips for tasty and time efficient meals. We’re no instagram influencers, so you'll have to look past the bad photography and dodgy 7:30 lighting.

THE PORRIDGES

Porridge; a warm bowl of goodness on a cold winter morning. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if it works for you then there's endless ways to get creative.

Useful Tip:

Try making a big batch on a Sunday morning then refrigerating it. Porridge will last up to 5 days, and can be heated up on the stove or in a microwave. Alternately, you can buy instant porridge sachets for a 2 minute fix.

EVERYTHING TOAST

One of man's greatest ideas was deciding to cook bread twice. When it comes to toast you'll never run out of options. Whether you're an avocado advocate or a baked beans girl, there's a topping for everyone (my personal vote goes to Nutella).

EGGS FOR DAYS

They might not've come before the chicken, but they're a bloody good start to the day. Whether you're frying, boiling, scrambling or poaching, this protein fix will keep you happily satisfied for hours. God bless the egg.

YOGHURT; A HIGHLY CULTURED BREAKFAST

A colourful alternative to cereal, yoghurt is both easy and under appreciated. Imagine if we all started our days as happy as the women in Muller Yoghurt adds.

Useful Tip:

You can prep your yoghurt and fruits the night before (whilst you're raiding the kitchen for desert) then add granola in the morning. A super time efficient and delicious brekkie.

AND IF YOU'RE FEELING REALLY ADVENTUROUS...

I'm not 100% certain what all of these are, but they definitely lead to one solid conclusion; we do in fact, have time for breakfast. If you think you could hack waking up 10 minutes earlier, why not try expanding your own breakfast horizons this week? You might be surprised by how much some Nutella on toast can improve a Monday morning.
