As we all tentatively step into a life that looks much more like it used to, it is natural that we reflect on the year that has passed and what we've learned along the way. So with that in mind please enjoy this piece by Anna Kassai in Year 9.
First, we were all worried,
All scared, afraid, shocked, concerned,
About what will happen?
What will happen to us?
To our families?
Our friends?
Will we be alright?
Second, covid came to our little island,
We hoped it would not be true,
Shops closed,
Restaurants delivering,
Hotels shutting down,
Schools online and hospitals working overtime,
How will we survive?
What should we do?
We could ask for help face to face but how could we because we couldn’t even move
Third, we were now used to this situation for months,
All comfortable home schooling,
All relaxed at our home workspaces,
No idea how much frontline workers were doing,
Were they getting paid enough?
Did they get to rest?
What about their children home alone?
Fourth, we gradually started moving into our new normal,
Some could go back to school
People got to decide if they wanted to go back to work,
We learnt new random things,
Could we now be professional bakers?
Could we become artists?
More importantly: have we become more organized? resilient? Independent?
Finally, well can I say finally?
For we don’t know yet,
A year has been taken away from us since we have been put into lockdown,
But was it all worthless?
Have we learned to make the best in every situation?
Have we learned to be open to trying new things?
Have we learned, to finally appreciate what we have and finally be able to see the world in a new perspective?
The pandemic took a toll on us,
Losing our family, our friends, ourselves but we all learned something,
But what would that change?
Could it help us tomorrow?
In a week?
In a month?
A year?
The answer is yes,
no matter what, the pandemic left an impact and we will look back thinking:
we really went through all that?
Did we really go months without them?
I got the chance to learn to miss them?
Would they mind a hug when I meet them?
Would I have ever seen the world in a different way without a pandemic?
